Welcome to the July 2026 edition of Assets.
The theme of this issue is 'Cross-sector/boundary outcomes' and Jerry Holdsworth (Morlan Group ) and Steve Whitla (Visual Meaning) tee it up perfectly with their thought leadership article 'The "bigger" picture'. David Jenkins, CEO of IPWEA, explains how cross-boundary integration is 'more than cosmetic rebranding' and his revelations on infrastructure theory will appeal to the epistemologist in us all.
We have a great feature on the Asset Management Excellence Awards, in which the honourees talk about how they have addressed the asset management challenges encountered during their journeys. And we do a deeper dive into the journey of Naveen Srivastava, of India’s Power Grid Corporation (PGC), winner of the 2026 McKeown Award for Individual Achievement. He shares a story not only of his resilience, but also that of PGC, and you will find that this resilience has contributed to the success of them both.
If you could not attend June’s IAM Global Conference, then please enjoy the shared experiences of Siobhan White (Aecom) and Matt Hateley (Ofwat). They have captured the energy of the room through their words. After hearing from them, you will surely want to attend the next conference near you!
Our CEO, Ursula Bryan, reviews the recent IAM Patrons in-person workshop. This group of industry leaders developed an actionable list of priorities for the IAM to consider, either as tasks for existing knowledge groups or to drive future Patron workshops. Ursula’s explanation of the process they followed, as well as the actions they have suggested, is an excellent read.
As always, there is a comprehensive list of events and opportunities. Make sure to get your chapter event included in the next (October) issue. We want to recognise your asset management achievements, so promote a team member, a project or yourself! We love to hear about your successes and how you have overcome the challenges on your journey. And if you need immediate feedback, don’t forget about the IAM Discussion Forum – we have asset management experts at the ready to answer your questions or weigh in on your ideas.
Until next time,
Joe and David, Assets co-editors

One of the great privileges of working in asset management is the opportunity to engage with professionals who are tackling many of the same challenges, regardless of geography or sector. Over the past few months, I have been fortunate to see this first hand, through two significant international events: the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management (GFMAM) face-to-face meeting in New Zealand and the subsequent Āpōpō Congress 2026, followed shortly afterwards by the IAM Global Conference and Global Excellence Awards 2026 in London.
In May, representatives of the GFMAM member organisations gathered in Hamilton, New Zealand, hosted by Āpōpō. Our hosts provided a welcoming and enriching experience for all the GFMAM representatives, with us all embracing the Māori language, customs and culture. Over three days, we reviewed progress on our GFMAM projects, reflected on the success of Global Asset Management Day 2026, updated our strategic priorities and agreed future face-to-face meeting plans. The discussions reinforced that the challenges facing our asset management community and wider society increasingly require global thinking and collective action. The willingness of professional bodies from around the world to share knowledge, experiences and lessons learned continues to be one of GFMAM’s greatest strengths.
"With delegates from 26 countries, it was a truly international experience, exploring the theme 'Connected World – Shaping Our Future', to deliver better outcomes in an increasingly interconnected and complex environment"
Following the GFMAM meeting, delegates joined the Āpōpō Congress 2026. The event's emphasis on global connections provided the most fitting stage for the GFMAM representatives to contribute throughout the congress. The congress sessions demonstrated the openness and eagerness of the delegates to learn from different sectors and countries. I can truly attest that all the GFMAM representatives left with a little piece of New Zealand in our hearts.
During June, it was a privilege once again to welcome people from across our global asset management community to our IAM Global Conference and Global Excellence Awards 2026 in London. With delegates from 26 countries, it was a truly international experience, exploring the theme 'Connected World – Shaping Our Future', to deliver better outcomes in an increasingly interconnected and complex environment.
As with every global conference week, I have so many highlights, including: the Patrons workshop; the Patrons dinner; hosting the opening panel discussion on cross-boundary integration; hosting the Chapter Chairs panel discussion; seeing delegates providing so many insightful comments on the cross-boundary integration resources; celebrating with the finalists and winners of the IAM Asset Management Excellence Awards 2026; and recognising the contribution of IAM volunteers, whose passion and commitment underpins the IAM.
However, it is always the people who are the real stars of the show. Whether it is seeing people I haven’t seen for a while, meeting people in person I have only ever met on Teams, or engaging with people for the very first time, it always leaves me energised and inspired. It is the people who make these events successful.
